Popular Day Trips from Porto

I’ll start with the presentation of the most common day trips from Porto, those that most visitors make when traveling to Portugal. To choose the ones you should do, always consider the distances from Porto, and the level of detail you want to assign to your trip.

1. Visit Braga on a day trip from Porto

If you’re visiting Porto, taking a day trip to Braga should be on your itinerary. Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, with a rich history dating back to the Roman times. In Braga you will find a fabulous historic center, some river beaches on Cávado river to enjoy in the summer, and awesome sanctuaries with incredible viewpoints.

Below are my favorite locations to visit in Braga, but consider reading my full article with things to do in Braga for more details.

  • Arco da Porta Nova and Rua do Souto, the most central road in the city.
  • Central Avenue in Braga.
  • Braga Cathedral and the Episcopal palace.
  • The Keep Tower and Terceiros Church.
  • The Liberty Avenue and Theatro Circo.
  • The spectacular Gardens of Santa Bárbara.
  • The Town Square where the City Hall of Braga is located.
  • The Biscainhos Museum, the best museum in the city, in my opinion.
  • The Church of Santa Cruz and the Church of São Marcos. The first is, in my opinion, the most beautiful in the city from the inside.
  • Raio Palace and the Square of São João do Souto.
  • Parque da Ponte, the most beautiful park in the city, in my opinion. After visiting it, go up to Picoto Viewpoint for an exceptional view, some say that it is the best in the region.
  • The Sanctuaries of Bom Jesus de Braga and Sameiro. At Bom Jesus, be sure to admire the incredible staircase and the oldest elevator in Portugal moving still with a water counterweight system.
  • The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães.
  • The river beach of Adaúfe (the most touristy and visitor-friendly in Cávado River). There are others, of course, such as the river beaches in Merelim de São Paio and Faial.

Don’t forget to try the typical Abade de Priscos pudding, undoubtedly one of the best desserts in the country, not only in the North of Portugal. You should also go for a lunch or dinner at Taberna Belga, ordering one of the best Francesinhas in Portugal.

Other tips for Braga day trip from Porto:
1 - Braga is 56km away from Porto. By car you should use A3 motorway.
2 - It is easy to get to Braga City Center by public transport, bus or train. 45 to 60 minutes of travel time from Porto Campanhã.
3 - It is better to have a car if you want to visit the sanctuaries, however, there are city buses you can use: check Rome2Rio website.

2. Visit Guimarães on a day trip from Porto

Next up is Guimarães, another of the main highlights of Northern Portugal, with the most beautiful historic center in the country. You should get to know it, starting with the Castle of Guimarães and the Ducal Palace, its main monuments. Known as the birthplace of Portugal, Guimarães will certainly transport you to medieval times as you discover the main tourist attractions of its historic center:

  • Santa Maria Street, with the Convent of Santa Clara and Casa do Arco.
  • São Tiago Square and Oliveira Square. Highlights include the Old Town Hall, the Salado Monument, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, and the Chapel of São Nicolau.
  • Alberto Sampaio Museum, of which the Jewelry Room stands out, with several national treasures from the 12th to the 19th centuries. You will also have access to the Cloister of the Former Monastery of Guimarães.
  • Toural Square, the heart of the city, with a beautiful fountain and the extraordinary Basilica of São Pedro.
  • The Public Garden and the Church of São Francisco.
  • The Republic of Brazil Square and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação.
  • And the Pedestrian Path on the old Walls of Guimarães.

Don’t miss visiting Guimarães at night! In the vicinity, you should also climb to the top of Mount Penha, where there is a sanctuary with incredible views to Guimarães’ center. You can make the ascent by cable car, for example, which is the oldest in Portugal, with about 1700 meters in length and 400 meters in elevation. Go explore the caves and chapels up there, among the rocks and boulders of the mountain.

With time, visit the Basilica of São Torcato and Citânia de Briteiros, the latter being the most spectacular open-air archaeological site in the North of Portugal. Be sure to check my article with things to do in Guimarães for more details on what it has to offer.

Other tips for Guimarães day trip from Porto:
1 - Guimarães is 56km away from Porto. By car you should use A3 motorway to Famalicão and then A7 to reach Guimarães.
2 - It is easy to get to Guimarães City Center by public transport, bus or train. Consider 50 to 75 minutes of travel time from Porto as an average.
3 - The cable car station to Mount Penha is right next to the city center, however is not working everyday during low season. It is operated by Turipenha.
4 - It is better to have a car if you want to visit places outside of the city center and Mount Penha.

3. Visit Douro Valley on a day trip from Porto

A day trip from Porto to Douro Valley is an excellent way to experience the beautiful Portuguese countryside and sample some of the world-famous local wine. Douro Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located about an hour east of Porto and is renowned for its stunning terraced vineyards and historic wine estates.

One of the best ways to explore Douro Valley is by taking a leisurely boat tour along Douro River, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. You can also visit one of the many local wineries to learn about the production process and sample some of the region’s delicious port wine.

Other popular attractions in Douro Valley include the charming towns of Pinhão and Peso da Régua. Consider also Lamego, with a fabulous sanctuary and castle, and marvelous churches, such as the Cathedral and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Desterro. The main museum is also precious with all its sacred art.

Douro Valley has a road that was in the past classified by international journals as the most beautiful in the world: N222. From Peso da Régua to Pinhão it is especially amazing, so why don’t you go drive it on a road trip?

I have many articles in this blog about Douro Valley, with all the info needed for you to plan your day trip from Porto with detail. Be sure to check them all!

5 - Consider 2h30m to get to Pinhão by train and almost 2 hours to get to Peso da Régua. Lamego is easy to reach by bus, but also more than 2 hours are needed to get there.
6 - Check the possibility to travel on Douro Historical Train, but remember to book it in advance if you are interested (a lot of time in advance, if possible!).
7 - Douro Valley is also the ideal place to visit on guided tours, if you are limited in time. I shared many Douro Valley tours at the beginning of this article.

4. Visit Viana do Castelo on a day trip from Porto

Viana do Castelo is a charming coastal town right in the north of Porto, situated on the banks of Lima River (where it meets the Atlantic Ocean), offering visitors breathtaking views of the sea. Its historic city center is home to numerous historic buildings, including Santa Luzia Sanctuary, which is perched on a hill overlooking the town. The view from up there is one of the best in the whole country.

In the historic center, be sure to visit Gil Eannes Hospital Ship, exploring at your own pace its various compartments, not only the crew’s quarters, but also the operating rooms. Check also the Costume Museum, learning more about interesting cultural traditions of the region, and also about the beautiful art of filigree. 😉

Viana do Castelo has nice beaches and pleasant coastal landscapes to also enjoy on a day trip from Porto. For example, I highlight Cabedelo Beach and the views around Montedor Tower.

As for gastronomy, be sure to taste the famous Balls of Berlin from Natário. 😉 Check my article full of things to do in Viana do Castelo if you wish to access more details on other places to visit and activities to do.

Other tips for Viana do Castelo day trip from Porto:
1 - Viana do Castelo is 75km away from Porto. By car you should use A28 motorway

5. Visit Aveiro on a day trip from Porto

Aveiro, also known as the “Venice of Portugal”, boasts picturesque canals, traditional colorful boats called “moliceiros,” and exquisite Art Nouveau architecture. It’s the perfect day trip destination from Porto, taking less than an hour by train or bus. Explore the city on a leisurely boat ride along the scenic canals or use the free bicycles known as BUGAs.

Aveiro’s city center is home to a fabulous Cathedral, to a gorgeous city park, and to the impressive Museum of Santa Joana. Don’t forget to add a friendship ribbon to the main canal bridges and visit the Costa Nova area for the best beaches and traditional colorful houses.

If you have more time, visit Ílhavo and its maritime museum, which includes the Museum-Ship of Santo André, a real cod fishing vessel (trawler) from 1948. It was built in the Netherlands, with a length of about 70 meters and a hold capacity for 1200 tons of fish. Other cod fishing ships can be admired in the Cod Port of Aveiro – they are really impressive!

To finish off, you can visit Vista Alegre Museum, home to many of the factory’s historical rich porcelain pieces. Try the delicious local sweets such as “ovos moles” and “tripas de Aveiro”. For more tips on things to do in Aveiro on a day trip from Porto, check out my dedicated article.

When visiting Porto, Matosinhos is a wonderful option for day trips to enjoy the beaches in the north of Portugal. These beaches are known for their clean waters and sandy shores, and are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. It is easy to get there because you have subway available departing from Porto city center, as well as regular buses.

The city of Matosinhos is home to one of the largest fishing ports in Portugal (Port of Leixões), so it’s no surprise that the seafood here is incredible. You can enjoy a delicious seafood lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants along the seafront promenade, while admiring the beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to the amazing food, Matosinhos has several attractions worth exploring, including the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, the Tidal Pool of Leça da Palmeira, the marina of Matosinhos, or the city park of Basilio Teles.

7. Visit Vila Nova de Gaia on a day trip from Porto

On a day trip from Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, don’t limit yourself to just visiting the Port wine cellars or the main attractions near Luís I Bridge. Consider exploring more of what the city has to offer. For example, you can take a pleasant bike ride along the vast Atlantic coast of Gaia, passing through beautiful beaches, such as Miramar Beach, with its old Chapel of Senhor da Pedra by the sea.

If you’re traveling with children, Santo Inácio Zoo is a great place to visit, with many animals such as lions and tigers. Other options for family-friendly activities include Gaia’s Biological Park and Lavandeira Municipal Park. For those interested in art, check out Teixeira Lopes Sculpture Museum, I loved it and it was totally free! And make sure to visit the small fishing village of Afurada by the Douro Marina.

Other tips for Gaia day trip from Porto:
1 - To reach Miramar beach, use a direct train from Porto Campanhã (20 minutes). From Miramar beach, use a bicycle to visit the rest of the coast of Gaia.

8. Visit Paiva Walkways on a day trip from Porto

Paiva Walkways are located in the Arouca Geopark, which is an internationally recognized geological park known for its unique geological formations. Recently, a new suspended bridge (516 Arouca) was added, 175 meters above the river, and stretching 516 meters, providing an even more thrilling experience for visitors and an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the surrounding landscape.

For nature lovers and hikers, this is a fantastic day trip from Porto. The Paiva Walkways feature an elevated wooden boardwalk following the Paiva River, allowing you to experience the river’s beauty up close. The path includes stairs, bridges, observation decks, and several river beaches where you can refresh yourself along the way.

The linear version of the trail is 8km and is of moderate to difficult difficulty. For the round trip, prepare for 16km, but it’s not necessary as transportation is available at the end to return to the starting point. You need to book this trail through this website, or then just join a guided tour.

For a less physically demanding route, start at Areinho, but if you plan to do the round trip, start at Espiunca instead. Don’t forget to bring enough water and swimwear and towel for a refreshing dip in the river.

Other tips for this day trip from Porto:
1 - Paiva Walkways are about 70km away from Porto. No easy public transport to get there, so you should really rent a car to reach them, or join a guided tour, like I mentioned.

Finally, an exciting day trip from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful city located in the northwest region of Spain (Galicia), known for its stunning cathedral and famous pilgrimage, which attracts millions of visitors each year from all over the world. If you are travelling with a car, why don’t you consider a stop in Vigo, Pontevedra or on other places in Rias Baixas, on the way to or from Santiago de Compostela?

Galicia offers the perfect opportunity for a multi-day road trip, with Santiago de Compostela serving as an excellent base for exploring the region. While in the city, make sure to visit the main squares of Obradoiro, Praterias, and Quintana, take a stroll through Alameda Park, and shop at the bustling Abastos Market. Off-the-beaten-path day trips from Porto

The above are just the most popular day trips from Porto, which means that there are other lesser-known possibilities that can result in excellent tours of the surrounding region of Porto in northern Portugal.

1. Visit Peneda-Gerês National Park on day trips from Porto

Peneda Gerês National Park is undoubtedly a wonder to discover in Portugal, especially if you’re a nature lover. I guarantee you won’t find a better place on continental Portugal to go hiking, but be prepared for the difficulty that some of the trails entail. Many places on the park are easily accessible to everyone for day trips, but the most idyllic locations are reserved for the more adventurous and physically fit.

This blog features articles about the park’s top waterfalls, lagoons, and trails, along with a comprehensive itinerary to visit Peneda Gerês. Below, I’ll only mention ideal locations for day trips from Porto, but of course, you should try to stay there for at least 2 or 3 nights, if you have the time.

  • Vila do Gerês and Caniçada Dam – This is a central location on the national park. Be sure to do some water activities there and enjoy the river beaches, visiting after the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta and the best viewpoints on the surroundings, such as Pedra Bela and Mirante Velho. Go for a walk on Mata de Albergaria and visit the Waterfall and lagoon at Portela do Homem.
  • Soajo and Lindoso – These are great entries for the National Park of Peneda Gerês. Both are old towns in the region, and their granaries stand out in the landscape. In Soajo, be sure to go have a lunch or dinner at Saber ao Borralho restaurant, with magnificent food to taste, and enjoy its several easily accessible natural lagoons, such as Poço Negro and Poço das Canejas. Not far from Soajo you will find Mezio and the beautiful Travanca Lagoons.
  • Sistelo – This is a small village renowned for its beautiful and rural terraced fields, being dubbed as the “Portuguese Tibet”. Nearby you will find an excellent ecovia next to river Vez. 😉
  • Ermida and Fafião – Go discover the beautiful Rajada Waterfall on a fast and easy trail from Ermida, and then the lagoons in Fafião, such as the Green Lagoon. Don’t forget the Tahiti Waterfall, but pay attention while accessing it, people died there already.

2 - Best Hikes and Trails in Peneda Gerês National Park
3 - Peneda Gerês National Park Waterfalls and Lagoons
Other tips for Peneda-Gerês National Park day trips from Porto:
1 - Do not try to reach Peneda Gerês National Park by public transports, do it by car or on guided tours. This is a remote location, remember that.
2 - Consider 1h30m drive to get to the above locations. Approximately 100 to 125km of distance from Porto.

2. Visit Ponte de Lima on a day trip from Porto

Ponte de Lima is much easier to reach than Peneda Gerês National Park. In Portugal it is well known for its Roman and medieval bridge, as well as for its gastronomy, namely its “arroz de sarrabulho” made with blood. 😉 Try it, seriously, it’s delicious especially when accompanied with the best Minho meats and “rojões”.

While in the historic center of Ponte de Lima, visit the Alameda dos Plátanos, the Terceiros Museum, the Towers of Cadeia Velha and São Paulo, and the Mother Church. I also found the Arnado Theme Park very beautiful, and if you are traveling with children, be sure to visit the Museum of Portuguese Toys, with various examples of toys used by past generations on the country.

In the surroundings of Ponte de Lima, I recommend a walk along the walkways of the Bertiandos Lagoons, following the “river path” from the Interpretation Center. If you are looking for a more genuine experience in northern Portugal, visit the region of Mesa dos 4 Abades, belonging to Ponte de Lima, with emphasis on the rustic village of Labrujó.

Other tips for Ponte de Lima day trip from Porto:
1 - Ponte de Lima is 85km away from Porto, 1 hour drive on A3.
2 - There are direct buses to Ponte de Lima, however they pass first in Viana do Castelo, and may not be available on the first hours of the day, being not ideal to use on day trips. 1h30m of travel time.
3. I recommend having a car to visit Ponte de Lima, even if you don't need it to visit the city center. 😉

These 5 towns in northern Portugal can be discovered in just a day trip from Porto, but you will need to wake up very early to check all the following spots. 😉 They are mostly located on the banks of River Minho, on the border with Galicia.

Arrive in Castro Laboreiro (Melgaço) at sunrise, and start by hiking up to its castle. After that, visit the viewpoint to Laboreiro Waterfall, and take a brief walk through the center of this remote village, that actually belongs to Peneda Gerês National Park.

  • Brejoeira Palace, in Monção (schedule a guided tour, and taste its green wines).

  • The Fortress of Valença (go for a quick walk on the wall, overlooking River Minho and the metal bridge that crosses to Tui, in Galicia).

  • The viewpoints to the mouth of River Minho in Caminha: the viewpoint of the Chapel of Santo Antão and the viewpoint of Sino dos Mouros.

If you’re visiting these 3 municipalities from Porto, be sure to check out the following must-see places. In Póvoa de Lanhoso, head up to Monte do Pilar for incredible views, a swing, and the Castle of Lanhoso. São Mamede viewpoint is also worth a visit, so make sure to climb up to its lookout post for the best views of the region.

In Fafe, stop by the city center to check the Rally Museum and don’t miss the Queimadela Dam reservoir, which has a circular route, boardwalks, a waterfall, and a river beach. For a unique experience, visit the Flintstones-like Penedo House.

In Vieira do Minho, explore the Cabreira Mountain Range, including the villages of Agra and Espindo, and the Misarela Bridge – the most unmissable attraction. Check out the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa as well. If you’re feeling adventurous, try some water activities at the Teleski Water Park and Ermal Island.

6. Visit Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca on a day trip from Porto

Regarding Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca, they are two interesting locations near the Peneda-Gerês National Park. What characterizes them the most are their centuries-old bridges, but of course, I can identify other places for a possible day trip from Porto.

When in Arcos de Valdevez, I recommend visiting Paço de Giela and exploring the historic center, which includes highlights such as the Valeta River Beach, the Avenue of Recontro de Valdevez, the Church of Lapa, and the Interpretative Center of Baroque in the Church of the Holy Spirit. Be sure to try “Charutos dos Arcos,” a delicious Portuguese sweet, and then climb up to the Santa Cruz Castle Viewpoint for the best view of the municipality.

When visiting Ponte da Barca, besides the bridge itself, visit Côrro Square, the Pombalino Market, the River Beach, the Republic Square, the Church of Mercy, and the Mother Church.

7. Visit Barcelos and Esposende on day trips from Porto

I also mention Barcelos and Esposende as possible day trips from Porto. Barcelos is the birthplace of the famous Barcelos rooster, an important symbol of Portuguese craftsmanship. Start your visit at Campo da Feira, where parking is easy, and then explore the historic center, including the Temple of Bom Jesus da Cruz, Barrocas Garden, Porta Nova Tower, Pottery Museum, Church of Santa Maria Maior, pillory, and ruins of the old Palace of Barcelos. Be sure to also visit the Medieval Bridge of Barcelos and the river beach of Barcelinhos.

Esposende offers plenty of water sports opportunities, including kite surfing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat tours. Promoting these activities are companies such as Go Site School, Kook Proof, ElementFish, and Dunar.

For a beach day, head to Suave Mar Beach. To explore the area’s natural beauty, skip the city center and instead check out the North Coast Natural Park, either hiking the full PR2 trail of Esposende – “Between Cávado and the Atlantic”, or just the stage of wooden walkways near Fão Nautical Club. Don’t miss the spectacular viewpoints of the Esposende Fossil Cliff near the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Guia, Castro de São Lourenço, and Mount Faro. End your visit to Esposende at the Apúlia Mills, a perfect location for a sunset.

Other tips for this day trip from Porto:
1 - Barcelos is a good day trip from Porto to do by train. Less than 1 hour to get there, 60km.
2 - To visit Esposende, in turn, I recommend a car to access all the fabulous locations I mentioned above. 😉 40 minutes from Porto by car, 50km.

8. Visit Amarante, Vizela and Santo Tirso on a day trip from Porto

Moving on to Amarante, Vizela and Santo Tirso, I clearly consider Amarante to be superior, with its spectacular bridge and São Gonçalo Church, right in the historic center.

Vizela comes next, being an excellent thermal city, with a magnificent and very pleasant thermal park, full of vegetation. Don’t forget to stop by Republic Square, in order to visit Pastelaria Fina and taste the delicious Bolinhol de Vizela. 😉 In the surroundings, how about admiring the viewpoints from São Bento das Peras Sanctuary?

Santo Tirso’s highlight is São Bento Monastery, located near the historic center. Additionally, Monte Córdova region offers beautiful attractions such as the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Assunção and the Fervença Waterfalls.

9. Visit Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim on a day trip from Porto

Vila do Conde played a significant role in the Portuguese discoveries, and visitors can now explore a fully restored 16th-century ship. The municipality is home to a vast heritage, including highlights such as the impressive Aqueduct and Santa Clara Monastery in the city, and the historic cividade de Bagunte in the surroundings. Vila do Conde is also renowned for having the world’s largest bobbin lace, which can be viewed in one of its museums. Visitors should not miss Vasco da Gama Square, the Church of São João Baptista, and the stunning Tourism beach. For a hidden gem, the beautiful Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia is a must-see, featuring exquisite ceiling paintings.

When it comes to a day trip from Porto to visit Póvoa de Varzim, be sure to explore the seafront promenade and marina, as well as Passeio Alegre and the area surrounding the casino. This municipality is most fascinating by the sea, but you will also enjoy discovering the ruins of Cividade de Terroso and the viewpoints at Mount of São Félix.

Other tips for this day trip from Porto:
1 - You can visit both places using the subway from Porto. 50 minutes to 1 hour of travel time. For the surrounding places I mentioned, car is needed.

10. Visit Espinho, Ovar and Santa Maria da Feira on day trips from Porto

Another less obvious day trip from Porto is to visit Espinho and Ovar instead of heading to Aveiro. Espinho boasts fabulous beaches and a lively seaside center, while Ovar has stunning churches decorated with azulejo tiles, such as the Churches of Válega and Cortegaça. Don’t forget to take a pleasant walk along the walkways of Barrinha de Esmoriz, and to taste the delicious Pão de Ló de Ovar.

I also suggest stopping in Santa Maria da Feira, especially to visit its unique-looking castle. 😉 This is a city with many events throughout the year, such as Perlim in Christmas and the Medieval Fair.

Other tips for this day trip from Porto:
1 - You reach Espinho, Ovar and Esmoriz using the train, just like you do for Aveiro. Less than 1 hour for all places.
2 - To visit the churches mentioned you may have to walk a bit from the train stations of Válega and Cortegaça, but it is doable.

Day trips from Porto to more distant places in Central Portugal

To fully experience the beauty of Central Portugal, I recommend using Coimbra and Nazaré as bases for exploration rather than just taking a day trip from Porto. There are numerous stunning locations waiting to be discovered in the surrounding areas, and using these cities as a base allows for a more immersive and fulfilling experience, trust me! 😉

1. Visit Coimbra on a day trip from Porto

Coimbra has a roman past and was once the capital of Portugal, and a city of kings, having a rich history to discover. Of the many things to do in Coimbra, I highlight a visit to its university, one of the oldest in Europe, which features a stunning monumental library and a beautiful botanical garden. Visitors can also explore the underground ruins of Aeminium on Machado de Castro National Museum, and then walk through the city’s historic center, visiting ancient churches such as the Old Cathedral and the Church of Santa Cruz, with the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal inside. Coimbra is located on the banks of Mondego river, so you may also opt for a stroll next to it, at sunset.

Other tips for Coimbra day trip from Porto:
1 - Coimbra has a lot to visit and discover. Consider it as a base for your travels in Portugal, and not as just a day trip from Porto or Lisbon.
2 - If you really want to visit the best of Coimbra in just 1 day, use the intercity train to get there, 1h15m of travel time.
3 - Coimbra has 2 train stations, Coimbra-A and Coimbra-B. Coimbra-B is the train station that connects Lisbon to Porto. Coimbra-A is the station in the city center, so you usually need to change trains in Coimbra-B to go to the center.

There are 4 caves you shouldn’t miss: the Caves of Santo António (my favorites), the Caves of Mira de Aire (the largest), the Caves of Alvados and the Coin Caves.
